In 2014, many kids got free or cheaper meals at school, but only a few of them got help with meals during summer. Not getting enough food can make kids gain weight and do worse in school. Kids might need to be taught again in the future, costing families and schools around $1,500.

The Summer Food Service Program gives free meals to kids under 18, with the Meet Up and Eat Up program offering healthy meals at various safe sites in the neighborhood. To find a place nearby or learn more, contact a sponsor in your area or call the Michigan Department of Education at 517-241-5374.
