The Michigan School for the Deaf had their last volleyball home game of the season on Thursday, 10/24/24. We played Landmark Academy and it was a fan appreciation night. Lot's of door prizes and swag were given out throughout the evening. Before the varsity match, Lanyah Duncans, our only senior, was recognized and had the team and fans in tears. We will miss her comedy on the court and on our trips. The emotions took a toll on the team and we were off to a slow start. The Tartars had too many receiving errors and lost the first set. Our team started moving more in the second set. Our receiving jumped up to 91%; however Tartars weren't setting the ball up for attacks. In typical Tartar fashion, we were finally playing like we all know they can in the third set. Errors were reduced drastically and team spirit started to increase. Despite the improvements, MSD lost 0-3; scores were 10-25, 13-25, and 17-25. Our serving was the highlight of the night, with only 3 errors and lot's of players serving at 100%; including senior, Lanyah Duncans.

This brings our regular season to a close. Our season record is 4-15. Our team goals were achieved! Tartars had well over the number of attack attempts they wanted to acquire with at least 150. Our serve receive percentage for the entire season ended at 81%; the goal was at least 75%. All of our Tartars also hit their personal goals. This was a successful season and I can not wait to continue to see this team grow. Most of our players are freshman and sophomores, so watching them on this journey will be amazing.

MSD is participating in districts this season to help get the experience needed to move on in the future. We will be playing at Genesee Christian School on Monday, November 4th, at 6:00pm. Our opponent has yet to be announced through MHSAA. Let's go Tartars!

Tournament Results: Varsity Volleyball, 10/19/24

The Michigan School for the Deaf's Varsity Volleyball team is in Wisconsin participating in their Firebirds Classic tournament. The tournament was held all day on Saturday, 10/19/24.

Our first game of the day was against Metro Deaf Schools and they were definitely looking for a rematch. It was a very hot and competitive game. The Tartars were receiving well and setting up the ball. The first set ended up going all the way to 30 points! Freshman Selma Allen served at 100% with 2 aces and was receiving at 90% with a kill. Lanyah Duncans used what she has been learning in practice and was able to successfully receive a couple of serves. We still lost the first set 28-30; but we were determined to get the next 2 for the win. The Tartars did just that! We took the next two sets, winning the match. Hope Allen did a great job setting up the ball leading the team with 6 assists and many kills. She is perfecting the setter dump. MSD beat MDS 2-1; scores were 28-30, 25-19, and 15-8.

There wasn't any time for a break and we jumped right into the next match against the hosting school Wisconsin School for the Deaf. The Firebirds have an experienced team with some hard hitters. The Tartars played well, trying their best to adjust their blocks. Molly Guthrie was on fire in the first set with several kills and several assists. She is also utilizing the setter's dump more successfully. Ava Ringey was our top server in this game; serving at 100% with 3 aces. She was also receiving at 80%. This is a huge improvement for her and it was exciting to watch her succeed. Ayla Brennan, our Libero, proved to be very important, since her teammates needed several breaks to readjust and compose themselves. WSD attacks proved to be too much for MSD and we lost 0-2; scores were 18-25 and 16-25.

Again, there was no time for breaks and we moved to another gym to play Illinois School for the Deaf. The Tartars were on fire in the first set. We gained a huge lead and were able to try out some of our more difficult serves. Phoenix Miller had 7 aces, 3 kills, and no mistakes receiving! MSD won the first set 25-12. The second set surprised us all. ISD started attacking more frequently and we needed to adjust. With a darker and smaller gym, Laura Reza-Jaimes needed to show us her serves and she made all of them over the net! Molly Guthrie also made zero serving errors along with 5 aces. The shock was overwhelming and ISD won the second set. Onto another third set and MSD was still in shock over the recent loss of the second set. Our spirit was low, despite 8th grader Destiny Smith trying her best to keep everyone smiling. Captains Hope Allen and Molly Guthrie didn't make any serving or receiving errors; however ISD continued to shoot the ball directly over, throwing MSD off of our usual performance. MSD lost the game 1-2; scores were 25-12, 19-25, and 8-15.

After a quick lunch break it was time for the bracket tournament. MSD had to take on last year's champions WSD. Our young team was exhausted. They have never played this many games in a row. They were feeling sick and defeated after the shocking loss against ISD. Coaches tried their best to get their spirits back up, but they were just all too tired. MSD lost 0-2; scores were 9-25 and 10-25.

The Championship match was WSD vs ISD and WSD held on to their title. Amazing job Firebirds! Thank you for being a gracious host.

Freshman Molly Guthrie was named an All Star and got another medal to add to her collection. Great job Tartars! We'll get them next year.

Our next match is on Thursday, 10/24/24. It's our last in season game and it's at home. MSD will be taking on Landmark Academy. Middle School plays at 5 and Varsity at 6. It's not only Senior recognition, but also Fan Appreciation Night. Admission is free and there will be door prizes! We hope to see you there. Go Tartars!

Molly Guthrie's serves are proving hard to receive and can easily frustrate our opponent. She racked up 10 aces tonight! MSD beat KWS 3-0; scores were 25-22, 25-20, and 25-22. As a team, the Tartars were serving at 85%, receiving at 98%, racked up 16 kills, 16 assists, and 23 aces! What a great night. Our varsity team is headed to Wisconsin to participate in their Firebirds Tournament this Saturday, 10/19/24. We enjoy this tourney every year and we are expecting some amazing competition and fun. Let's go Tartars!

Game Results: Varsity Volleyball, 10/15/24

The Michigan School for the Deaf's volleyball teams played against New Life Christian Academy Tuesday, 10/15/24. We're noticing a pattern of starting out slow and not moving like we should and finally warming up by the end of the second set. This means that the Tartars may need to come up with a new warm-up routine to get them moving. In the second set, Tartars starting having more ball control and setting up the attacks. Molly Guthrie played more aggressively, getting the only kill for tonight while also leading the team in aces. With Ava Ringey back on the mend, the team spirit increased along with trust and confidence in each other. The third set was a nail biter. The lead went back and forth and our athletes were fighting hard. Laura Reza-Jaimes got a chance to show what she can do in the back row and had some great passes. NLCA's team full of seniors were serving hard and smart and MSD ultimately couldn't recover. MSD lost 0-3; scores were 8-25, 8-25, and 18-25. Our next match is on Thursday, 10/17/24, in Brighton against Kensington Woods Schools. Middle school plays at 5pm and varsity at 6pm. Let's go Tartars!

Game Results: Middle School Volleyball, 10/15/24

On 10/15/2024, the Middle School Volleyball team played an away game against New Life Christian Academy. Despite having only 6 players with no substitutes, our team put in little effort with a lot of nerves/worries. During the first match, the players appeared to start slow and not moving as they tend to. I continually encouraged the team to stay focused on our game and not get discouraged by the score. Serving was identified as an area needing improvement. In the second match, one of the challenges was coming back as a team after losing a set, and remaining calm during close matches was our serving but we still encountered some challenges with receiving and passing. We lost 0-2; the scores were 12-25 and 21-25. Our goal is to build up the confidence of the hard hits and movement at our future practices. Don't give up, girls! Our next match is an away game on Thursday, 10/17/24, against Kensington Woods Schools. The Middle school plays at 5 pm and the Varsity at 6 pm. Let's go MSD Tartars!

Game Results: Varsity Volleyball, 10/9/24

The Michigan School for the Deaf took on a new opponent last night, 10/9/24. Kensington Woods Schools came to MSD to compete and we had a lot of fun with this team. We are equally matched and they were extremely nice with great sportsmanship. Games were hot and competitive. As a team our serving and receiving percentages for the night were over 80%. Selma Allen led the team in aces, with 6. Even though our receiving percentage was almost at 90%, the Tartars were not being as aggressive as they should be. They were giving KWS easy balls. Our errors in serving and attacking is what caused us to lose the game. Lanyah Duncans continues to impress fans with her stuff blocks. She racked up 4 more last night. MSD lost 0-3; scores were 16-25, 22-25, and 19-25. Our next match up is against New Life Christian Academy on Tuesday, 10/15/24, in Emmett. Middle School plays at 5 and Varsity at 6. Let's go Tartars!

Game Results: Middle School Volleyball, 10/9/24

The Michigan School for the Deaf competed against the Kensington Woods Schools last night, on 10/9/24. The Middle School and Varsity teams played at MSD. The games were highly competitive, and the players performed exceptionally well. Our team's serving and receiving were outstanding. Aubrey Stress scored seven aces, and Roxy Mader scored four aces. Jacelyn LaVoy discovered her ability to do overhead serves instead of underhand and is excited to continue doing so for the rest of the season. MSD won 2-0 with the scores of 25-18 and 25-17. Our next match is against New Life Christian Academy on Tuesday, 10/15/24, with the Middle School playing at 5 and the Varsity at 6. Let's go Tartars!

Game Results: Varsity Volleyball, 10/8/24

The Michigan School for the Deaf's Varsity Volleyball team played against St. Thomas More Academy today, 10/8/24. The Tartars started out slow and struggled to get warmed up. In the second set, they started moving more and their receiving percentage went up by 30% from the first set. STMA was serving and hitting hard and MSD couldn't catch back up. We finally saw our Tartars in the third set. Phoenix Miller and Lanyah Duncans played more aggressively, matching STMA's attacks with touches on the blocks. Phoenix was able to get a kill and a stuff block! Hope Allen continued to lead the team in serving and receiving. As a sophomore, I can't wait to see her future not only in this sport, but as a leader. MSD lost 0-3; scores were 6-25, 13-25, 18-25. Ayla Brennan has shown great improvement and her confidence is growing. She is proving to be a valuable Libero. Our next game is tomorrow, 10/9/24, on our home court! We will be playing Kensington Woods Schools. Middle School plays at 5pm and Varsity at 6pm. See you there. Go Tartars!

Game Results: Middle School Volleyball, 10/8/24

The Middle School Volleyball team of the Michigan School for the Deaf played against Chatfield Academy last Tuesday, 10/8/24. The Chatfield team served and hit hard, making it difficult for MSD to keep up. As a result, MSD players became frustrated and struggled with serving and receiving. In the second set, their frustration started to affect their performance. I called a time-out to help them refocus and regain their spirits. The team made a great effort and faced tough servers in the game of the season. Destiny Smith performed her best, continuously trying to keep the ball off the ground in the first set, while Jacelyn LaVoy showed strong passing in the second set. Unfortunately, MSD lost 0-3, with scores of 21-25, 15-25, and 5-15. Our next game is scheduled for 10/9/24 on our home court against Kensington Woods Schools. The Middle School game starts at 5 pm, followed by Varsity at 6 pm. We hope to see you there. Go Tartars!

Game Results: Varsity Volleyball, 10/5/24

The Michigan School for the Deaf's Varsity Volleyball team travelled to Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD) for a quad meet that took place all day Saturday, 10/5/24. Since this was an all day event, all matches were best 2 out of 3.

First up we had to take on MSAD, our hosts for the weekend. It was a long drive in and most of our Tartars were still tired. Molly Guthrie didn't let that stop her. She was serving at 100% with 2 aces and receiving at 86%. Ayla Brennan took on the role of Outside Hitter, and got her first kill of her volleyball career! The change up in our usual rotation threw some of the teammates off, as some players were now playing next to others they haven't played with before. This left our team frozen at times and unable to recover. Tartars lost 0-2; scores were 22-25 and 9-25.

The next match MSD played against Metro Deaf Schools (MDS). Tartars were ready to fight and they were setting the ball up more and more. Both setters, Molly Guthrie and Hope Allen were able to assist some kills this match up. Phoenix Miller led the team in aces, racking up 4. MSD's serving percentage and receiving percentage were both over 85%. This is how you win matches. The Tartars took their first win of the season, 2-0. Scores were 25-18 and 28-26. What a fight!

Our last match up of this trip was against Utah School for the Deaf. Coach Lantagne had some previous trauma from last year's loss against them and she let the team know that it needed to be resolved. Tartars did not disappoint. As a team, we racked up 22 aces! They were able to get a comfortable enough lead that some players were practicing more difficult serves. Senior Lanyah Duncans started playing more confidently and picked up a kill. The MSD Tartars got their pay back from last year and won 2-0; scores were 25-22 and 25-9.

Great job Tartars! Our next match up is Tuesday, 10/8/24, against St Thomas More Academy. The game is in Burton and starts at 4:30pm. Hope to see our fans there. Let's go Tartars!

Game Results: Middle School Volleyball, 10/4/24 & 10/5/24

The Michigan School for the Deaf's Middle School and Varsity Volleyball teams traveled to Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD) for games (for Middle School) that were on Friday 10/4/24 and Saturday 10/5/24 and quad meet (for Varsity) that took place all day Saturday, 10/5/24.

Friday, 10/4/24:

We arrived around 4:30 PM on Friday, had dinner, and then played our first game! Once again, our Tartars were still wobbly from the long drive. We played 3 out of 5 games. GraceAnn Garcia brought her A-game with 10 powerful serves and 7 impressive aces, while Jacelyn LaVoy showcased her passion for the setter position with 5 skillful sets and her first kill! Our team dominated with a triumphant 25-13 win! In the second set, the game was incredibly exciting, and our fans cheered us on with so much enthusiasm. It was such a close match! Roxy Mader showed off her serving skills with 11 serves and 7 aces, and Madison Guthrie did an amazing job with her defensive passing, successfully receiving some tough serves from the MSAD. Unfortunately, we lost with a score of 24-26. In the third set, GraceAnn Garcia brought some fantastic serves that lifted our spirits after a bit of a rough start. She served 15 times and scored 4 aces! Roxy Mader amazed us with her incredible sets, and Aubrey Stress blew us away with her killer serves, helping us secure a big win in the third game with a score of 25-15. In the fourth set of our match, our team, the Tartars, faced a tough time as exhaustion and frustration started to take a toll due to errors in serving and receiving. Unfortunately, this led to a significant loss with a score of 8-25. I understand how challenging that must have been for the team. In the last match, the score was tied 2-2. Roxy Mader lifted our spirits after the break with her words of encouragement, giving us hope to win. She also made an impressive comeback with 5 serves, including 4 aces. Destiny Smith displayed her hard work and aggressiveness with her kill attempts. Unfortunately, we lost with a score of 12-15. Despite the loss, we were pleased with our performance. It was the first time in five games that we had to play the full five games. We ended up with 2-3. We are looking forward to the next game on Saturday at 9 am on 10/5/24!

Saturday, 10/5/24

We had a match between MSD and MSAD. Our team was all set to work on their serving, receiving, and movement. Once again, we played the best 3 out of 5 games. Our first match, Destiny Smith, has proudly served with 4 serves and 3 aces and an amazing performance with her serving and receiving passes. Kaylee Davis demonstrated her skills as an outside hitter and was eager to improve in that position. We won with 25-17! At our second set, Kaylee Davis made a great comeback as a server, delivering 7 serves with 3 aces! Aubrey Stress was very determined to help her teammates by providing strong back support with their passes. MSD won with 25-15! In our third set, I want to emphasize how well our players performed. All of the girls showed great effort and skill, especially in their serves. Many of the girls successfully received the ball and made excellent passes. Destiny Smith managed to score 5 aces out of 7 serves. The game didn't end at the usual 25 points but went up to 30. Unfortunately, we lost with a score of 28-30. In the fourth set, we secured a victory with a score of 25-23, marking another thrilling match! Jacelyn LaVoy delivered outstanding passes and skillfully retrieved the ball from the ground. Additionally, our 6th graders, GraceAnn Garcia, and Kaylee Davis, demonstrated great effort in attempting to pass the ball over the net.

We are very proud of the Tartars and are looking forward to more games this season! Great job, Tartars! Our next match is on Tuesday, 10/8/24, against Chatfield Academy, starting at 6:30 pm. Let's go, Tartars!

Game Results: Varsity Volleyball, 10/3/24

The Michigan School for the Deaf's Volleyball teams went to Landmark Academy to compete today, 10/3/24. After the middle schoolers won their game, our varsity girls were looking forward to playing. However, when they got on the court, they froze and did not stay on their toes. The first set was rough, so more coaching needed to happen to get this team fired up. The Tartars started moving in the second set, making fewer errors. They didn't miss any serves and their receiving jumped up by 20% from the first set. Galilea Tristan-Perez got some more playing time and even though she didn't get many touches in, she never stopped moving her feet and staying positive. The Tartars started coming together thanks to captain, Hope Allen. Our fans would've liked to see more attack attempts; this would've led to more points. By the end, The Tartars came together and celebrated a good game. MSD lost 0-3; scores were 6-25, 14-25, and 11-25. Our volleyball teams are headed to Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD), tomorrow, 10/4/24. Our Middle School team will be taking on MSAD's middle school team both Friday and Saturday; while our Varsity Team will compete in a quad meet with MSAD, Metro Deaf School, and Utah School for the Deaf on Saturday, 10/5/24. Let's go Tartars!

Game Results: Middle School Volleyball, 10/3/24

Our middle school volleyball team had their first away game against Landmark Academy tonight, and they did a great job! We won two sets with scores of 25-20 and 25-12. Despite feeling a bit frozen at the beginning because it was our first away game, they quickly warmed up and got into the plays.

During tonight's game, Aubrey Stress showed exceptional as our team captain. In the second set, she achieved her first Attack Kill. Additionally, her consistent efforts to keep the ball over the net greatly contributed to our team's success.

Madison Guthrie demonstrated exceptional skill and determination while playing at the front line. She consistently displayed quick reflexes, skillfully retrieving the ball from the ground, and making every effort to set the ball over the net. Despite facing numerous challenges, she persistently attempted to pass the ball to the setter.

During a timeout, Roxy Mader showcased exceptional leadership skills and boosted the team's morale by delivering an outstanding performance, including serving five aces in the second set.

The MSD volleyball team is heading to Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD) tomorrow, 10/4/24. Our middle school team will have games with MSAD's middle school team on both Friday and Saturday. Additionally, our varsity team will compete in a meet with MSAD, Metro Deaf School, and Utah School for the Deaf on Saturday, 10/5/24.

Game Results: Middle School Volleyball, 10/2/24

In our recent home game against Eton Academy on 10/2/2024, our team, MSD, secured a notable 2-0 victory with set scores of 25-17 and 25-20. During the third set, the Eton volleyball coach and I discussed the possibility of an additional game to provide more practice opportunities for the players, given their small team size. They were receptive to experimenting with different positions to find their comfort zone before our upcoming match against the Minnesota School for the Deaf. I want to acknowledge Kaylee Davis for her exceptional performance as the team captain, particularly her outstanding serves in the second set, resulting in five aces. Additionally, our newest player, Dayhanni Wiggins, showcased her potential by making her first official attack and achieving the first kill in the first set. Following our recent practice sessions, we have focused on refining our agility, improving our reaction time, and enhancing our passing and setting skills. I am delighted to witness significant progress within our team. Looking ahead, the Middle School and Varsity's next match is scheduled for Thursday, 10/3/24, against Landmark Academy. The game will take place at Landmark and is set to commence at 5:00 pm for the Middle School and 6:00 pm for Varsity. Go Tartars!

Weekend Results: Varsity Volleyball, 9/27/24-9/28/24

The Michigan School for the Deaf welcomed The Ohio School for the Deaf to our campus for the weekend of 9/27/24-9/28/24. We had a weekend of volleyball and fun! The first game was Friday night and our Tartars were pumped and motivated. The amount of improvement this team is making shows that they are committed to learning and making adjustments. The OSD Spartans, the fans, and even the referees made comments to our team on their success. The MSD Tartars were serving and receiving at over 80%. Captain, Hope Allen, helped with those percentages as she was serving and receiving at 100%! Tartars are having more touches, which means more opportunity for attacks. The team had the highest number of attack attempts so far for their season, and even Destiny Smith, an 8th grader, was able to rack up a kill! Despite all the improvements, MSD lost 0-3 to OSD. The scores were; 17-25, 16-25, and 14-25. The students enjoyed a social and pizza in the Tartar Center afterwards.

Come Saturday afternoon, after both teams had a practice in the morning, The MSD Tartars and The OSD Spartans were ready to go again. We had some new referees, and once again they commented on the improvement witnessed from previous games. Our team is gaining a lot of control and becoming more confident, setting the ball up more and more. While our serving percentage remained over 80%, our receiving percentage dropped below that mark. The Spartans must've worked on target serving during their practice, because they were serving hard and to our least experienced players. OSD would get a strong lead, then MSD would fight to catch up. It was a trend that we were trying to break, and by the third set, we did! Even though we didn't take the win, our Tartars fought hard and adjusted well. MSD lost 0-3. Scores were; 18-25, 13-25, and 20-25. Both Selma and Hope Allen missed zero serves for the day, with Hope getting the highest amount of aces with 3.

Next up the MSD and OSD coaches combined forces for some fun games against our players. The coaches played the MSD Tartars first then the OSD Spartans afterwards. The coaches came out undefeated! Everyone was laughing and having fun. It is always fun to watch the players come together as a team and spot the future leaders.

Later that evening, after some community recognition of MSD's 2013 football win and an alumni game, the students enjoyed socializing, snacks, and some new games in the gym. It was like Christmas morning, watching the Tartars open boxes and setting up games. They had a blast and OSD were great guests.

The Varsity Tartars next match is Thursday, 10/3/24, at Landmark Academy. Middle School plays at 5:00pm and Varsity afterwards.

Don't miss Middle School's home game this Wednesday, 10/2/24, against Eton Academy at 5:00pm. Let's go Tartars!

Game Results: Varsity Volleyball, 9/26/24

Our Michigan School for the Deaf Varsity Volleyball team had another home game last night, 9/26/24. We played against New Life Christian Academy. The Tartars are really coming together and playing more like a team. They show trust in their teammates and are very supportive of each other. Selma and Hope Allen had positive attitudes throughout the game and the team continued to look to them for support. Hope Allen was serving phenomenally and racked up 7 aces. Ava Ringey played aggressively attempting to attack more than we have all season and adding a kill to her statistics. Despite Molly Guthrie still under the weather, she was able to get some assists and was serving at 100%. The Tartars fought hard and were able to take the second set; but we couldn't pull out the win. MSD lost 1-3; scores were 15-25, 25-22, 13-25, and 14-25. Our next match is today, 9/27/24, on our home court at 6:30pm. The Ohio School for the Deaf will be here and our Tartars are hoping to pay them back for our losses last weekend. Let's go Tartars!

Game Results: Middle School Volleyball, 9/26/24

On 9/26/2024, at our home game against New Life Christian Academy, our Tartars put up an incredible fight! Although MSD lost 1-2, it was an intense game and our first win was within reach. The scores were 23-25, 25-12, and 11-15. The girls faced some initial jitters and frustrations, but after our timeout, they regrouped and played with exceptional skill and determination! Madison Guthrie dominated the five serves with two aces during the first set, and Kaylee Davis served five with two aces as well in the second set. Destiny Smith made the Tartars' first official attack and ended up with 3 kills in the second set! GraceAnn Garcia was the team captain today and exuded confidence, ensuring that the ball did not touch the ground. I'm excited to see the players grow and dominate future games! Our next match is on Tuesday, 10/2/24, against Eton Academy. The game will be held at home and will start at 5:00 pm. Your enthusiastic support would mean the world to us. Go Tartars!

Game Results: Varsity Volleyball, 9/21/24

It is day 2 at Ohio School for the Deaf, 9/21/24. The Tartars played the Spartans again this morning at 11am. MSD was awake and ready to go. We had a solid plan going into today's game and vast improvements were made. Our athletes were awake and playing smart. Hope Allen's leadership skills help Ava Ringey pick up more sets than the day before. The Tartars started out strong keeping up with our opponent. Communication was clear and our service reception was in much better shape. In the last set, OSD started to get cranky, as MSD held the lead in the beginning. They used that anger and came back with a vengeance, making our Tartars fall apart. MSD lost 0-3; scores were 20-25, 22-25, and 13-25. Our student-athletes did an amazing job this weekend and we can only improve from here on out. They have lots of fun activities planned for today and tomorrow while they recover. Our next game is Tuesday, 9/24/24, against a new opponent, Kensington Woods Schools. It's a home game, and middle school will play first at 5pm, with varsity playing afterwards. Let's go Tartars!

Game Results: Varsity Volleyball, 9/20/24

The Michigan School for The Deaf Varsity Volleyball team arrived at The Ohio School for the Deaf safely. Our Tartars took on the Spartans today, 9/20/24. We are down a setter, due to illness. Ava Ringey stepped up to the plate and performed extremely well, trying her best to set up attacks. The varsity team was happy to have some 8th graders join us, as they turned out to be very helpful. They may have been nervous, but both Aubrey Stress and Destiny Smith were excited to be able to show everyone what they can do. In the first set, our 8th graders received more serves than the varsity athletes! Our front row was attacking more and the Tartars were scoring more than they have this season. They fought hard, but lost 0-3. Scores were 15-25, 11-25, and 17-25. We will rematch OSD tomorrow morning at 11am. Let's go Tartars!

Game Results: Varsity Volleyball, 9/19/24

The Michigan School for the Deaf's Varsity Volleyball team played against St Thomas More Academy today, 9/19/24, on our home court. The Tartars started out confident and held the lead for most of the first set. Our team was serving at 85%. Phoenix Miller was playing aggressively and got our team's first Kill of the season. MSD fought hard, but still lost 25-27. Unfortunately, the confidence did not last. STMA had a tough server and our athletes just couldn't find the energy and courage to keep going. Our spirit dwindled and so did our focus. Some sick and injured players definitely did not help, but hopefully they will all be feeling better soon. MSD lost 0-3; scores were 25-27, 3-25, and 2-25. We will be traveling to Ohio School for the Deaf this weekend and have a game on Friday and Saturday. Let's go Tartars!

Game Results: Middle School Volleyball, 9/10/24

Our Middle School Volleyball team had their first game on 9/10/2024! It was a home game and a good experience for the new players. Our fans were a huge support, cheering us on! The Tartars were playing against F.A.I.T.H schools. They had some game jitters and were very nervous in their first set. They tried to overcome their jitters and did their best with a score of 8-25. The team had a quick meeting to get refocused. It was an amazing second game! They worked hard and showed their fans what they can do. The Tartars did great, with a score of 24-26! They performed well and enjoyed the game, which helped them understand volleyball better, making us all feel more connected and engaged as a team.
Aubrey Stress showcased her growing confidence with her serves, acing 6 times and giving her best! Roxy Mader's team spirit was evident at the game, always lifting others' spirits. Our next match is against New Life Christian Academy on Sept 26, 2024, at 5 p.m. at Michigan School for the Deaf. We hope to see you all there. Go, Tartars!

Game Results: Varsity Volleyball, 9/10/24

The Michigan School for the Deaf's Varsity Volleyball team had their first match tonight, 9/10/24. A home game is the perfect way to open our season and the fans did not disappoint. The Tartars took on the Falcons from F.A.I.T.H. schools. MSD has never competed against them, but since they compete against many of our competitors, we decided to give them a try. Well, this was the first time our varsity team has played against a team at this level of play. They struggled in the first set, trying to get their bearings and shake the nerves. During the second set, they became more brave and started listening to their coaches. This helped build their confidence and start to play their own game. The last set, the Tartars started to look like they did in practice and came together as a team. MSD lost 0-3; scores were 5-25, 9-25, & 13-25. The entire team stayed positive and supported each other throughout. Phoenix Miller did a great job learning and adjusting using self discipline. Our setters, Molly Guthrie and Hope Allen, led their team with their amazing sportsmanship, ultimately keeping the team together. Great job! Our next match is 9/19/24 vs St Thomas More Academy at 5:00pm. It's another home game, so we hope to see you there. Go Tartars!

Last Thursday, February 8th, the MSD Academic Bowl team (Nevaeh Johnston, Laura Reza-Jaimes, and Dylan Shuping) went to New Mexico School for the Deaf for the West Regional Competition for the weekend. The view of the Sangre de Cristo (the subrange of the Rocky Mountains) was so breathtaking. There are many adobes on the NMSD campus. Last Saturday, it snowed up to 8 inches! AB players from Hawaii School for the Deaf have never seen the snow in real life. They made a snowman for the first time! We did not win any matches but we were very fortunate to take this great opportunity to go to the West Regional to grow our knowledge and experience to be prepared for next year. All scores are posted on Gallaudet's youth program website. Go check it out! Tournament Results: Varsity Volleyball, 10/21/23 Fireball Classic

Michigan School for the Deaf's Varsity Volleyball team attended the Wisconsin Firebirds Classic Tournament today, 10/21/23. Teams involved included Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Ohio. All matches were best out of 3 sets. Before lunch was round robin and placement matches were later in the evening.

MSD took on OSD first thing in the morning. We had a surprise fan in the audience and it really pumped the team up. We always enjoy playing our rivals. We may be rivals, but we are real close friends as well. Lisa Rennhack played aggressively, getting some attacks in. Selma Allen was our top server for the entire day, including this first match. She was serving at 100% with 2 aces. Our spirit was high, but our energy was not. These Tartars are not morning people. MSD lost 0-2; scores were 21-25 and 10-25.

Next up, we took on WSD. All our round robin matches were back to back to back, no breaks! We were finally awake and warmed up. Jaleah Allen was proud to try her jump serves all day today and it definitely paid off. Her serves were hard to receive and she played very aggressively. Ivy Golob was also playing aggressively, earning herself a Kill and more playing time today. WSD took advantage of our mistakes, MSD lost 0-2. Scores were 8-25 and 20-25.

Finally we played ISD for the last match of the round robin games. These games were extremely close and the Tartars were on fire! Clearly we were not out of energy yet. Genna Plouse showed why she deserved to be named captain by leading the team all day. She was supportive, respectful, and tried her best to help coaches educate the team. Phoenix Miller was serving this game and was able to get 3 Aces while serving over 80%. Molly Guthrie started to attack and got the only kill of the match. A lot more attack attempts were being made due to the level of control our team is starting to exhibit. Despite the improvements, MSD lost 1-2; scores were 18-25, 25, 14, and 9-15.

Well... after a break it was time to play ISD again. This time it was for 3rd or 4th place in the tournament. Now that the Tartars knew what to expect from them, we were ready. The team as a whole got 16 aces, 2 kills, and were serving above 80%. Laura Reza-Jaimes racked up 3 of those aces as her nerves finally wore off. Tartars were playing as a team and having a lot of fun! Hailey Horton closed out the match serving at 100% with 2 aces...... WINNING the game! Tartars won the final game of our season! Everyone who has watched this team throughout the season knew that they were capable of doing so. MSD won 2-0; scores were 25-17 and 25-19.

GREAT JOB TARTARS! Our season has come to an end, but what a great way to end it. Jaleah Allen received an All-Star award this tournament; voted by coaches of the opposing teams. I'm not sure why she was shocked. She is an amazing player and is becoming a great leader. She is only a freshman and I cannot wait to see her grow.

Tournament results:

1st=Wisconsin School for the Deaf

2nd=Ohio School for the Deaf

3rd=Michigan School for the Deaf

We'll see you when we get back to Michigan. Meanwhile, enjoy some photos in the Gallery.

Referees and Coaches were impressed with the Tartars spirit and drive. It doesn't matter what the score is, our team always tries their best and they work together as a team.

Senior Genna Plouse has been working on her jump serve every practice and she had the confidence to try it at her last high school volleyball home game EVER. And... she got 2/3 over! What a great memory for her last match.  Our other senior, Lisa Rennhack, continues to follow directions and is versatile.  No matter what is asked of her, she is willing to adjust and make improvements to benefit the team. She keeps the Tartars alive.

We ended the night serving at 88% and only allowing 3 untouched balls to hit the floor. The Tartars have definitely accomplished their goal this season. Jaleah Allen's service receive successfully helped get those volleys started. Elizabeth Therrien played aggressively in the front row and took every opportunity to attack.  The Tartars played like a team and used their heads to plan their next move. We're getting there!

MSD lost 0-3; scores were 12-25, 10-25, and 13-25. Our next match is our last home game; this Thursday, 10/19/23. We will be playing Landmark Academy at 5pm. It's Fan Appreciation night, so admission is free! Come celebrate our Seniors' last volleyball home game, get some Tartar gear, win some prizes, eat some food, and of course cheer us on!

Fundraising Tournament Results, 10/12/2023

The Varsity Volleyball hosted their annual fundraising tournament 10/12/23. There were four teams: Tartars, Students, Families, and Staff. It was a double elimination bracket style tournament. Games were close and the staff wanted to give the families a chance to play their Tartars, so they took over the last championship match. We hope to continue this tradition. Now that the event has more participants, we'll probably have more teams next year.  It was a success and everyone had a blast! Great job everyone.  See pictures in our gallery!

2nd match: Staff vs Families; 25-22

Michigan School for the Deaf played on our home court today, 10/10/23, against Center Point Christian Academy. Tartar fans never disappoint and our team always plays better when the stands are full.  Before the match began, we reviewed our team goals and got in the right mindset to continue to make improvements.

Our serving goal is 80% and by the 3rd set ALL of our serves were in, 100%! Even first time player, Laura Reza-Jaimes, was serving at 100%; with an Ace too. CPCA has some hard servers and hitters this season, but MSD showed no fear. Only 3 balls went untouched, which matched our last game. Mind you, in our first game of the season we had 14 untouched balls hit the floor. That's a huge improvement! MSD lost 0-3; scores were 10-25, 4-25, and 10-25.

Coaches continue to remind the team that we are younger and less experienced than the other varsity players. The Tartars continue to impress and if this team sticks together for the next few years, they will be tough competition. Our next match is Tuesday, 10/17/23 at 5pm, at New Life Christian Academy. We had a lot of fun playing this team earlier in the season, so come out to NLCA to cheer us on. Go Tartars!

Michigan School for the Deaf played St. Thomas More Academy today, 10/5/23.

We took a well deserved rest yesterday and it helped a lot. We looked and acted like Tartars on the court and it felt fun. Lisa Rennhack is back, and it is clear how her positive attitude and spirit helps pull the team together. Our communication on the court was outstanding! The Tartars fought hard and made some improvements.

There was only 1 ball per set that touched the floor without a Tartar going for the ball. This is our team goal and the Tartars were excited that we improved. We were also handling the ball with more control, adding in a setter.  Selma Allen was our top server today, getting all of her serves over the net.  Even though Selma may have been serving well, the rest of the team struggled and our serving percentage went down dramatically.

MSD lost 0-3; scores were 9-25, 8-25, and 13-25. Our next match is Tuesday, 10/10/23, against Center Point Christian Academy. The game is at home and starts at 4:30pm. Come cheer us on. Go Tartars!

Michigan School for the Deaf varsity volleyball team travelled to Landmark Academy today, 10/3/23.

The Tartars got home late last night and we should've taken a day off to recoup. Many of the student-athletes went home and rested. We still had 7 players ready to go, so we went ahead with the match.

Elizabeth Therrien was expected to play more than usual, and she showed great improvement in her passing. She was also 3 for 3 in her serves. The performance of this game is the scheduling fault. Even though they were exhausted, they tried their best to stay positive and by the end of the game Tartars had smiles on their faces again.

MSD lost 0-3; scores were 8-25, 4-25, and 8-25. Our next match is this Thursday, 10/5/23, at St. Thomas More Academy. Game time is 4:30pm. It's local, so come support us. This team has proven time and time again that they play better for their fans. Let's Go Tartars!

Tournament Results: Varsity Volleyball, 09/30/2023

Michigan School for the Deaf travelled all the way to Oklahoma for their Bison Homecoming weekend. The Tartars played ALL day today, 9/30/23, and boy are they tired!

Round Robin was all before lunch time and it was best out of 3 sets.

Our first match of the day was against Arkansas School for the Deaf. Even though we were serving at 87%, we didn't get that many opportunities to take advantage of that. ASD was able to receive well and the only ace of the match was made by Jaleah Allen. Jaleah also stepped up her role as a leader and proved she was ready for more responsibilities. The younger Allen player, Selma, was receiving great and showed she had enough self-discipline to fix her mistakes. MSD lost 0-2; scores were 8-25 and 9-25.

Next up was Oklahoma School for the Deaf. OSD has a lot of seniors with a lot of experience, but that didn't deter our young team from playing their best.  Ava Ringey played aggressively and continues to make improvements by listening to the coaches feedback. She has a positive attitude and will go far.  Molly Guthrie continues to impress and shock the audience with her motivation and passion for volleyball. The Tartars WON the first set! It was our first win since bringing volleyball back to MSD. Despite the improvements, our serving was not up to par, and we gave away too many points. MSD lost 1-2; scores were 25-23, 14-25, and 13-15.

Bracket play was after lunch and it was best out of 5 sets.

MSD took on OSD again in bracket play. The Tartars started out strong and aggressive, once again taking the first set. Ava and Molly both got KILLS, our first of the season! 7th grader, Jacelyn LaVoy, stepped up to the plate as we were short one of our leaders due to illness. She proved she will be ready to take on the setting position when our senior setter graduates this year. That senior, Genna Plouse was on top of her serves this match and didn't miss any of them.  Hailey Horton was serving for the first time this season and racked up 5 Aces. OSD's seniors were hitting at us hard and MSD had a hard time recovering. Many of our Tartars became tired and hungry after the first set and it started to show on the court. MSD lost 1-3; scores were 25-20, 11-25, 11-25, and 17-25.

We were done playing volleyball for the day, but we enjoyed watching ASD and OSD play each other. ASD won the tournament. All teams played well and had fun! Great job TARTARS! Now it's time to enjoy a night of football and socializing before taking the long trip back home.

MSD's next game will be on Tuesday, 10/3/23, at Landmark Academy. Game time has been changed to 7pm, due to the hosting school having other matches before us. We would love to see you there. GO TARTARS!

Michigan School for the Deaf played New Life Christian Academy today, 9/26/23, on our home court.  NLCA provided some good friendly competition and our team had a lot of fun tonight!  Our team goals this year are to increase our serving percentage to at least 80% in games and to communicate more effectively by not letting the ball go untouched. Well... it's only 3 games into the season and the Tartars are already focused on their goals. We were at 87.7% serving for the evening and our untouched ball count has dropped since our last match. This team is on the rise! We had 4 players who didn't miss any of their serves tonight; Genna Plouse, Jaleah Allen, Ava Ringey, Jacelyn LaVoy. Great job! Tartars racked up 14 aces, but we're still working on those kill and assist numbers. All of the sets were extremely close; however MSD lost 0-3. Scores were 13-25, 23-25, and 20-25.  MSD will be travelling to Oklahoma School for the Deaf this weekend to participate in their homecoming weekend. We'll be playing Oklahoma and Arkansas on Saturday, 9/30/23. Games will be livestreamed on OSD's website, so please check us out! Stay tuned for updates. Good Luck in Oklahoma and have fun Tartars!

Michigan School for the Deaf’s varsity volleyball team played at Center Point Christian Academy today, 9/21/23. The Tartars started out slow and didn’t look like the same team that played on Tuesday, but by the 3rd set they started to pick up the pace. Molly Guthrie racked up 7 Aces today; 4 in a row in our second set. Jacelyn LaVoy had more playing time today and she proved why she deserved it with a higher receiving percentage. Ava Ringey got rid of her game jitters by the 3rd set and began to play more aggressively. It’s hard to believe that all 3 of those girls are in middle school! I can’t wait to see their confidence grow. Great job tonight Tartars! MSD lost 0-3; scores were 7-25, 11-25, and 18-25. Our next match is Tuesday, September 26 in our home gym. We’ll be taking on New Life Christian Academy at 5pm. Come join us, Tartars always perform for their fans!

Michigan School for the Deaf had their first varsity volleyball match of the season today, 9/19/23. MSD played at home against St. Thomas More Academy.  It's always nice to play your first game at home, as the fans always help our Tartars spirit.

Even though it was our first game, it was clear that improvements were made from last season. Both referees and the opposing coach made sure to comment on the amazing job this young team did. It was hard for them to believe how young they are. They showed maturity, spirit, and self discipline throughout the match.

Both Selma Allen and Phoenix Miller proved they were ready to take on the role of a game server and were 3 for 3 behind the line.  We were able to set it up a couple of times and Molly Guthrie gained the Tartars' first official attack. Pretty soon these Tartars will start racking up the Aces and Kills. They are eager and motivated! STMA received well and they had a really strong server that we just couldn't shake. MSD lost 0-3. Scores were 11-25, 13-25, and 8-25.

Our next match is this Thursday, 9/21/23. We play in Burton at Center Point Christian Academy, at 4:30pm. Hope to see you there. Go Tartars!
